Things To Do While In Sacramento
Some Subud members coming for the Helpers' Gathering may have others with them who are not Helpers, or who do not do latihan, etc. For their benefit, Lucas Hess has provided this short list of things to do while here that weekend.
Subud members who are not serving as Helpers are welcome to join the general latihans and meals. Registration is required.

- The railroad museum in Old Sacramento, a short walk along the river from the Best Western motel is one of Sacramento's most visited attractions. Old Sacramento itself is also a very nice place to spend some time with lots of shops, restaurants and places of general interest.
- On Sunday, Sacramento has one of the largest Farmer's Markets in California underneath the freeway downtown. It is about 3, perhaps 4 miles from the motel or from KVIE (where the Gathering will take place), and easily accessible if you are driving. If you like to see what the Central Valley produces this shouldn't be missed. Everything there must be grown, caught, made or reared by those selling it. Be prepared to spend at least a couple of hours here. It's well worth it.
- Very close by are two museums worth the time. The Crocker Art Museum went through a massive building project about 4 years ago and has excellent exhibits. Also the California Automobile Museum on Front Street is an interesting place to visit, featuring right now the "flash and flare of the 50's and the atomic age of automobiles".
- The Sacramento bike, running and walking trail runs for nearly 40 miles along the Sacramento and American rivers and is a wonderful place to get some exercise. Easily accessed from both KVIE and the Best Western motel.
- For those who simply can't spend a day without looking at farm equipment there is a major museum on Interstate 5 about 10 miles north of KVIE in Woodland. It's called the Heidrick Agricultural History Center. Also in Woodland, the Hayes Antique Truck museum is a treat for those who love old trucks.
- Sacramento has many playhouses from the Chautauqua to B Street owned by Timothy Bussfield and his brother Buck.
- We have two coffee houses that made the top ten list of coffee houses in the USA. Temple and Old Soul, both worth visiting and stocking up on caffeine. We have our share of Starbucks, Java City and other local roasters.
- We can provide a list of good to excellent restaurants, if anyone is interested. We have the most diverse population mix in the United States according to the last census. Large Russian, Ukrainian, Hmong, Vietnamese, Japanese, Thai and Middle Eastern ethnic groups all live in Sacramento with restaurants featuring their various cusines. From pho's to excellent vegetarian fare, it's all available here. One of my favorites is the restaurant on Nordstrom's 3rd floor at Arden Faire Mall.
- If you have an interest in horticulture, the grounds surrounding the State Capitol has at least one of every kind of tree in California. In Davis, 15 miles to the west; the home of UC Davis, there is an outdoor walking arboretum that stretches for nearly 4 miles on campus. UC Davis is a well known agricultural university and the town itself is quaint, livable and full of fun restaurants and shops.
- Further, we are less than 2 hours from Tahoe, Napa, Amador County (famous for wine and listed as one of the best family vacation sites in America) or San Francisco. The Baylink ferry from Vallejo to SF is a special treat. Check with them for times of departure and return.
